On December 1st, 2016 the Fair Labor Standards Act will require that most covered employees be compensated the federal minimum wage for the hours worked, as well as receive the overtime pay at time and one half rate for hours worked over forty hours in a work week. However, there are a number of exemptions known as “white collar” They are as follows:

  • Executive

  • Administrative

  • Professional (learned and creative).

  • Computer employee

  • Outside sales

  • Highly compensated employee (HCE)

Be sure to prepare for these changes by reviewing your company’s benefit plans, as well asses sick, travel, and PTO’s and how they will be affected. Communicate with your employees strategically as this is a good opportunity to let them know your pay schedule, organization values and the layout of the exemptions that affect them.
