As scary as it is, any company can be vulnerable to payroll fraud. Many companies choose to use a payroll services provider as a way to safely manage their payroll, but many of these companies can be compromised as well.

As an employer, you must be on alert and know what to look for.

Cybercriminals typically target the employees within the organization to make their move. They’ll use spoofing software to impersonate the CEO or the executive branch of the company, and will email the individuals within the company to get them to release payroll services to the scammers. It often takes about one or two missing payments before the company catches wind to the con that occurred.

Fraudulent payroll services will set up “ghost employees” on the payroll. Because they have control of the payroll platform, these services will create fake employees and will pay these fake employees a salary. This is a scam that can easily slip through the cracks if you’re not paying attention.

Scammers will impersonate a valid contractor. A scammer who’s posing as a valid contractor will send an unsolicited request to the company update the contractor’s payment information— thereby stealing the banking credentials of the vendor.

Be wary of these payroll scams, as it’s very easy to get trapped in one if you aren’t careful. If you want to use a payroll service you can trust, contact Primary Payroll today.
